XXII Annual SIDI Conference

Migration and International Law: Beyond Emergency?
8 June 2017
9 June 2017
Thursday 8th and Friday 9th June, 2017
Contatti:
Introduction

Of all the great social phenomena of our time, migration possesses a particular pertinence for Italy. It is common knowledge that our nation is one of the principal gateways into Europe, and that it has been traversed by an ever increasing stream of migrants over the last decades. Whether it is justified or not, there is not denial that public discourse on migration has undertaken an alarmist tone which sees migration as an emergency that must be dealt with urgency.
Much ink has been spilled elaborating on the role of international human rights law in the context of migration, but at present these efforts provide a solitary foothold in what is otherwise an uncertain and ever-changing landscape. Is it possible to overcome this impasse?
The XXII annual meeting of the Italian Society of International Law and European Law will tackle this question in an attempt to overcome this perceived, if not actual, state of emergency. Possible solutions to this question will be enriched by an interdisciplinary debate and complemented by extra-European perspectives. These elements, along with a multi-session structure, will elevate this conference by allowing the effective exploration of the many legal challenges arising from this complex contemporary phenomenon.
