Refuge Fundamentals: architecture like a refuge.

The Refuge lands at the Course in Construction engineering - architecture of the University of Trento. Architecture of buildings for shelter, defence and monitoring of the territory on the boundary between human settlements and the mountain.

The alpine Refuge lands in the lagoon. This is the topic of the works presented by DICAM. The exhibition Refuge Fundamentals was held between 21 and 23 November: a round table and exhibition of projects and documentary researches and studies (still ongoing) drafted during 2014 by about 250 students of the course in Construction engineering - architecture on the topic of “The Refuge”, and example of architectural planning in extreme conditions, combining the contemporary architecture with the needs of high-mountain environment.

The University of Trento went back to Venice for the second time, after its first participation in 2012.
The 2014 proposed various topics and the school of architecture of the University of Trento focussed on the concept of refuge.
They highlighted a twofold dimension: the former deals with the architectural features in a geographical and environmental situation on the boundary between high-mountain human settlements, like the Alpine environment, which marks a significant part of the Trentino landscape. The latter refers to the “fundamental” value of the refuge, being a kind of basic shelter, which creates essential spaces to live in, from which architecture has drawn and continues to draw inspiration for the aesthetics of architecture.

4 courses of the master’s course in Construction engineering - Architecture participated in the exhibition, analysing the topic of the refuge from specific scientific viewpoints. They exhibited three still ongoing projects.
UniTrento also participated with some spectacular plastic models of architectures and a video presenting the environmental and landscape context connected with a set of refuges in the Dolomites (Brenta) and Catinaccio. They also produces panels and posters regarding dissertations in the active teaching and research sectors, devoted to the preservation, recovery and renovation of buildings, the organization of the construction site and restoration in the architecture, design and representation of the architecture.
