Two BEC research projects on the ultracold atoms financed by the EU

The FET QUIC and AQUS projects financed within the programme Horizon 2020

EU funding for the Trentino research team on ultracold atoms. 184 projects were submitted within the framework of the EU Programme Horizon 2020 FET (Fundamental and Emergent Technologies), 13 of which were approved. Two of them involve the  Bose-Einstein condensation Center (BEC Center), active within the University of Trento, together with the Italian National Center of Optics of the National Research Council.

The first financing was allocated to the project  “QUIC (Quantum Simulations of Insulators and Conductors”), which will last 4 years and will be coordinated by the European Laboratory of Non-linear Spectroscopy.
The BEC Center of Trento benefits of 530,000 EUR to study the phenomena of quantum transportation and the properties of insulating and conductive systems, through experiments with the atomic ultracold gases. The coordinators of the BEC Center of Trento are Professor Sandro Stringari (University of Trento) and Gabriele Ferrari (researcher at INO-CNR).

The second winning project is “AQUS (Analog quantum simulators for quantum many-body systems”), which will last 3 years, coordinated by the University of Heidelberg. The project deals with the development of optic and atomic platforms for simulators of dynamic quantum simulators to be used to study a wide range of complex physical systems. The Trentino coordinator will be Iacopo Carusotto (researcher of INO-CNR at the BEC Center).
