Assist. Prof. Begüm Demir receives ERC Starting Grant of EUR 1.5 Million for Five Years

Assist. Prof. Begüm Demir, from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento, has been awarded by the prestigious Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The ERC received 3,085 proposals in this call of which around 13% was funded. The grants are awarded under the 'excellent science' pillar of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme.

The ERC will fund her project BigEarth - Accurate and Scalable Processing of Big Data in Earth Observation with € 1.5 million for five years. This will enable her to set up her own research team and conduct ground-breaking ideas at Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, University of Trento.

The BigEarth project aims at exploring crucial information for Earth’s health from the massive Earth Observation data archives by developing accurate and scalable methods and tools. The outputs of the project will highly contribute to the climate change and ecological studies.

 Assist. Prof. Begüm Demir is the only researcher in Italy, receiving the ERC starting grant in Computer Science and Informatics Panel in this call.
