In memory of Emilio Gavezzotti - professor and cultural operator - and for grants for young researchers on the Roman Empire

A professor from Milan donated 50,000 EUR to the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento, in memory of his brother and to support young researchers. The decision is the result of a material and cultural heritage, of family relationships and of ties with the city of Trento.

The story begins with the proposal of a money donation amounting to 50,000 EUR to the Department. The proposal was signed by Angelo Gavezzotti, in memory of his brother Emilio, professor and cultural operator from Milan.

He wants the donation to be used by the Department of Humanities to finance grants for young researchers - who have already obtained their Doctoral title - willing to carry out studies on the history and the culture of the Roman Empire.

The proposal is accepted, the legal and accounting elements are evaluated and the fund is opened, named “Donazione Gavezzotti Emilio”.

The news was released during the visit of Angelo Gavezzotti, who used to be a university professor in Milan. He met the Rector,  Daria de Pretis the Director of the Department of Humanities, Fulvio Ferrari and Elvira Migliario, professor of Roman history.

Angelo Gavezzotti told “In October 2012 my brother, Emilio Gavezzotti died. He had been Latin professor’s assistant at the University of Milan, then journalist, music expert and teacher at the “Volta” High School in Milan”. Being his only heir, he inherited an apartment in Milan, which he sold in April 2012. Hence his decision to make some donations on behalf of his brother: about 3,000 discs and compact discs to the Volta High School, for a Music listening room named after his brother; a music library to the music association “Canone Inverso”, in Corsico, which published on the web the book collection “Emilio Gavezzotti”; a library including Greek and Latin classics and other books to the Philological Club in Milan, which arranged the book collection in a private room, and finally a 50,000 EUR donation to the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento.

Why is the Gavezzotti family so fond of Trento? “The Gavezzotti family is particularly fond of Trento and its province because one of our aunts (Elisa Gavezzotti) married Umberto Molignoni, who then died in 1981. He used to be the owner of the Biochemo Chemical Industry, which for years had created jobs and popularity to the city. Thanks to the very frequent visits to Trento, where my cousins still live, the city has become a second homeland for my family”.

He then adds: “My wife, Alessandra Gara, who died in 993, has been for years a colleague and a co-operator of Elvira Migliario, at the University of Pavia. She now is professor at the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento”.

More information on the life of Emilio Gavezzotti is available in the Press release .
