Sven Jakob, a German student from Merzig (Saarland) is the first graduate in the Double Master’s Degree of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germania) and the University of Trento (Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanic engineering).

The Awarding Ceremony took place on 27 October in Mesiano, in the Department of Civil, environmental and mechanic engineering

The Double Degree is the result of the agreement signed in 2006 and renewed in 2011 between the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Fakultät Für Bauingenieur-, Geo- und Umweltwissenschaften) and the University of Trento (former Faculty of Engineering). Today the agreement involves the Department of Civil, environmental and mechanic engineering and it is coordinate by Professor Marco Tubino.

Sven Jakob started his university career in Germany and studied in Trento starting from the second semester 2010/2011. After passing his exams according to the double degree programme, he went back to Germany to take the remaining exams and draft his dissertation, which he defended in the German university, in front of the Karlsruhe’s supervisor, Professor Stephan Fuchs and the Trento’s supervisor, Professor Marco Ragazzi.
He graduated in Engineering for the environment and the territory and also obtained his Diplom-Ingenieur für Bauingenieurwesen del Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

In his dissertation (“Development of a construction manual for floating-roof biogas plants in Gunung Kidul, Indonesia”) Jakob develped a Construction Manual for a semi-decentral biogas plant in developing countries. During his studies he spent three months in Indonesia, where he observed the construction of three biogas plants.

Starting from that experience – says Jakob – I developed a Manual tailored to the local conditions, focusing above all on the low costs and the plant’s durability. Currently I am working for a biogas company in Germany, in the R&D Department for the development of international projects. In Brazil they are implementing a biogas plant to produce warm water, to be used both for cooking and for health services. In Colombia we are trying to launch a flexible scale biogas model which we developed. The company is aiming at working with the Italian market too. The language which I learned during my double degree will help me a lot, above all regarding the use of the Italian technical terminology”.
