CIBIO researchers welcomed at the Italian Senate's

Versione stampabile

On 10 November, in the Zuccari Room at Palazzo Giustiniani (Rome) Marie-Laure BaudetSheref Mansy and Andrea Lunardi, together with CIBIO’s Director, Alessandro Quattrone, met with the Senate’s President, Pietro Grasso and the other researchers who came to or returned to Italy.

They participated in the conference “The heart of science: the stories of scientists who choose Italy”. The event was promoted by the Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Foundation, which supports talented young scientists, contributing to the creation of new research areas in the field of biology in Italy, thus fostering the international mobility to the benefit of a multidisciplinary culture and favouring the collaboration among Italian scientists and the Harvard Medical School of Boston.

Three out of the 24 million dollar invested by the Foundation were granted to three scientists who chose Trento to carry out their researches: Sheref Mansy (2009), Marie-Laure Baudet (2012) and some weeks ago, Andrea Lunardi.

Thanks to the Armenise-Harvard Career Development Award, they started to work at CIBIO - Centre of Integrative Biology of the University of Trento.

The event held on 10 November was aimed at making these brilliant researchers meet with the Italian members of Parliament and people interested in promoting basic research as the driving force for the scientific advance and the enhancement of society.

The important progress in the biomedicine - as recognised by the Harmenise-Harward Foundation itself - depend directly on the advances of the basic knowledge, which has a high risk of unsuccessful results but it is fundamental to understand the basic mechanisms of things.

“Our battle against brain-drain”, said Pietro Grasso “Is carried out not only thanks to economic support but also safeguarding the high level of the scientific environment surrounding the young researchers. Our efforts aim at making Italy a country capable to create excellence and to attract them as well. We need to reverse the brain-drain trend, which steals away our best young researchers and scientific excellences and deprives us from our future. Carry out research in prestigious work environment, with talented and stimulating colleagues is very attractive”-
