The new members are Paolo Macchi and Riccardo Zandonini for the scientific area, and Giovanni Pascuzzi and Giuseppe Sciortino for the area of social sciences, humanities and law.

They were elected yesterday to the Academic Senate of the University of Trento for the 2016-2019 term. They will take office on April 1st and their mandate can be renewed once.

Macchi, Zandonini (in his second term), Pascuzzi and Sciortino will join the three members appointed by the Rector (Flavio Deflorian, Giuseppina Orlandini and Gianni Santucci) in the Academic Senate, the University’s governing body. The Academic Senate (as per art. 11, (1), of the Statutes) collaborates with Rector Paolo Collini in the definition, implementation and coordination of the University’s academic and research activities. Also, based on the proposals submitted by departments and centres, it contributes to the drafting of scientific and academic plans and their implementation, to the allocation of resources and the recruitment of professors and researchers.

Students’ representatives also seat in the Senate in plenary sessions.

The new members, full professors, were elected by academic staff (full professors, full researchers and researchers with temporary contracts under art. 24, (3), point b) of Law 240/2010). Of the 543 eligible voters, 429 (79%) cast their ballot.

In the technical and scientific area, 211 people voted out of a total of 286 eligible voters (74%): Macchi was elected with 87 votes, while Zandonini obtained 68 votes. In the same area, Fabio Massacci received 41 votes (12 blank and 3 void votes).

In the area of social sciences, humanities and law, 218 people cast their ballot out of 257 eligible voters (85%): Pascuzzi and Sciortino obtained respectively 76 and 70 votes. The third candidate, Paolo Gatti, received 61 votes (with 8 blank, 1 rejected and 2 void votes).

Polling stations were open yesterday from 9 am to 17 pm in Trento (department of Humanities), Povo (Polo scientifico-tecnologico Fabio Ferrari) and Rovereto (Palazzo Fedrigotti). Voters could cast one vote for a candidate of their area. The central election committee is now going to confirm the results.

Candidates to the Academic Senate are divided into two lists to meet the requirement expressed in the University’s Statutes (art. 12, (2)) to ensure an equal representation of the different scientific areas of the University.

Under the University’s General Regulation (art. 92, (3)), the technical and scientific area is composed of the following departments and centers: Physics; Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering; Information Engineering and Computer Science; Industrial Engineering; Mathematics; Psychology and Cognitive Science; the Centre of Integrative Biology CIBIO.

The area of social sciences, humanities and law includes the departments of Economics and Management, Humanities, Sociology and Social Research and the faculty of Law.
