GranularFlows 2016 is a Winter School that offers a new vision of sediment transport, hyper-concentrated flows, debris flows and snow-avalanche phenomena based on the mechanics of granular flows.

Topics

GranularFlows2016 proposes a revision of the rational principles of river hydraulics and sediment transport phenomena in the light of recent findings in the mechanics of two-phase granular flows. In this perspective, the mechanisms governing the suspended and bed load transport and hyper-concentrated flows and their most relevant application, will be reconsidered. An important aspect of the course will cover the derivation and characterization of different aspects of depth-averaged models with some hints on numerical aspects. Two general lectures are scheduled on Smooth Particles Hydrodynamics and on Large Eddy Simulation. Finally, a field trip in the Dolomites will give some tangible examples of the possible applications of the matter of the course.

Target

The course is primarily intended for PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and researchers interested in acquiring the basic instruments for theoretical, experimental and numerical research on sediment transport and granular flows.

At the end of the course, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The certificate will be issued upon verification of the signatures daily taken during the classes. Those interested in obtaining certified 3,5 ECTS will be requested to pass a short examination.
