Abstract

Next-Gen ITS will rely on a combination of AI, advanced connectivity (e.g. 5G), and cloud-edge continuum compute infrastructure to optimize mobility in our cities. Huawei is experimenting a novel ITS offering to optimize traffic in Chinese mega-cities under the name of TrafficGo. Among the many components of such system, there is an online adaptive method developed in the Intelligent Cloud Technologies Lab at the Huawei Munich Research Center. The method leverages a combination of online forecasting, random search and optimization to define a robust and effective optimization of traffic light plans and therefore improve traffic performance. In the context of the Torino City Lab, the team could test and validate online adaptive algorithm also in a European traffic, showing excellent performance on a simulated scenario. During this talk, we will present both the adaptive traffic optimization method, as well as the journey of its validation in the context of the Torino City Lab.

Keyworkds: Online AI, traffic optimization, smart city, adaptive system
