Abstract:

In this talk we will consider the so called J.J. Moreau's sweeping processes, a class of rate independent variational inequalities with a convex constraintdepending on time. This kind of problems have found applications in several areas such as elasto-plasticity, economics, electrical circuits, and crowd motion modeling. We propose a new approach which relies on a new technique of reparametrization by the arc length for BV functions with values in the family of convex (or mildly nonconvex) closed sets endowed with the Hausdorff metric, where the jumps are connected by asuitable choice of geodesics. We will show some applications of this method, for instance the solution of some open problems about the continuity of the vector play hysteresis operator with respect to various BV-topologies. Some generalizations will be also considered.
