Abstract:

In many situations it is important to know when a mapping defined on a subset can be extended to a mapping on a larger set with some desired properties, such as continuity or differentiability. An important tool in this area is Whitney’s Extension Theorem, which characterizes when mappings defined on a compact subset of Euclidean space can be extended to a C^m mapping defined on the whole space. We review Whitney’s Extension Theorem in Euclidean spaces and study its applications and potential extensions to more general spaces.
