The First Detection of Gravitational Waves

Abstract:

The long-awaited observation of gravitational waves has now been  accomplished by the twin LIGO detectors, opening a new observational  window on the Universe. The first signal is as well the first  observation of a black hole binary, while they were merging into a  single black hole. In addition, it allows unprecedented tests of gravity  in the strong field regime.
We will overview the main points of this discovery for non specialists  of the field, and provide an outlook on the next LIGO-Virgo observations  and their expected impact on gravitational wave astronomy.
