The relation between policies, gender relations, female employment and fertility is one of the major issue of contemporary societies and at the heart of Valeria Solesin’s works. As many welfare analysts have pointed out, by influencing gender relations and family arrangements, work-life policies may enhance or reduce female activity and birth rates. Moreover, the increasing use of flexible contracts may reduce the possibility of future planning thus impacting on maternity choices. Drawing from this debate, we invite participants to investigate the relation between social and employment programs on one side and gender relations, female activity and fertility on the other. The panel aims at hosting comparative and inter-disciplinary approaches, while both qualitative and quantitative methods will be welcomed. The panel encourages also papers developing case-studies on the evaluation of single policy programs. The following issues are indicative of the fields of the panel:
• Analysis of work-life balance, equal opportunities, work or employment policies in a comparative perspective.
• Analysis of social-demographic trends (i.e. fertility and women’s occupation) in a comparative perspective.
• Analysis of the relations between policies, women’s choices and cultural assumptions.
• Papers devoted to the analysis of the implementation phase of social and employment programs (both in a comparative perspective and as single programs).
• Impact evaluations of single policy programs on different outcomes conducted through counterfactual techniques.
