Last July, a group of students from West Virginia University in Morgantown (USA) spent four weeks at the University of Trento, immersed in the intensive study of Italian language, culture and history. Cooperation between the two universities dates back to 2004, when the first bilateral agreement was signed. Since then many Trento students have spent some time studying at the US university and students from West Virginia University have attended courses in Trento. The credits they gained while abroad were transferred 
to their home university on their return. Thanks to the agreement, a number of graduates from Trento also had the opportunity to work as teaching assistants with Annastella Vester, professor of Italian language and culture at West Virginia University, where they attended Master’s program of their choice, free of charge. The intensive summer program for US students was initiated thanks to Sabrina Francesconi, professor at the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento, who carefully supervised the partnership with the American university, and patiently supports exchange students helping them in choosing their courses, and Annastella Vester, coordinator in the “Italian Studies” area at West Virginia University. We asked professor Annastella Vester, who came to Trento with US students, to give us her views on this experience.
Professor Vester, why did you choose the University of Trento as the location for the summer program for students of West Virginia University?
For two reasons. First, because Trento is a friendly, safe, not too big city, with a beautiful old town and a lot of history and culture to explore. It is surrounded by the Alps and is close to many tourist destination that my students find very attractive. Another quality of Trento is the fact that there aren’t many American tourists, so my students can enjoy to the full their four-week experience in Italy, meet Italian students and make friends with them. The second reason is that the University of Trento has an excellent reputation, is well organized and offers quality services. The University personnel I worked with to organize the Summer School and later during the program itself were very kind and efficient. Besides, thanks to this summer course in Trento, American students had the opportunity to connect with the city and its University, so they might decide to spend a full semester here in their future.
How is this four-week program structured?
Students attended two courses: an Italian language course at the University language center, in the morning, and a course on Italian culture, taught by me in the afternoon, in a room of the Department of Humanities. As part of the Italian culture course, students visited some of Trento’s historic buildings and monuments (the Romans remains and the Castello del Buonconsiglio), and several cities (Bolzano, Florence and Venice). They stayed in San Bartolameo, a new residence hall where they could meet students from Italy and other countries. They didn’t miss the chance to taste the local cuisine, and often visited Trento’s restaurants.
What did your students learn from the Summer School?
Students benefited greatly from participating in the Summer School. Their knowledge of Italian increased significantly thanks to the language course and the stay in Italy, they made a lot of progress and felt more at ease when they had to speak in Italian. They learned about the history of Trento, Trentino and Italy, thanks to Italian culture classes and visits to Italian cities. But they also learned about everyday life of Italian students, their different traditions and habits.
What is your opinion on the quality of services offered by the University of Trento to international students?
The University’s services are excellent in my opinion, and everything works fine. When we arrived to Trento, the residence hall staff had prepared some bikes to be loaned to our students, and this surprised me. I think the University puts a lot of energy into trying to make life easier for international students and to make them feel at home when they are in Trento.

STUDENTI USA A TRENTO
La collaborazione dell’Ateneo con la West Virginia University: intervista ad Annastella Vester
Un gruppo di studenti della West Virginia University di Morgantown (Stati Uniti) ha trascorso quattro settimane di studio intensivo della lingua, della cultura e della storia italiane presso l’ateneo di Trento lo scorso luglio. La collaborazione che unisce i due atenei risale al 2004 con la firma del primo accordo che ha reso possibile per molti studenti di Trento trascorrere un periodo di studio presso l’ateneo americano e in egual misura per gli studenti della West Virginia University frequentare le lezioni a Trento e ottenere il riconoscimento delle attività svolte all’estero, una volta rientrati nel proprio ateneo. Tramite questo accordo alcuni laureati trentini hanno inoltre avuto l’opportunità di affiancare, in qualità di teaching assistants, la docente di lingua e cultura italiana presso la West Virginia University, frequentando in tal modo gratuitamente un programma di Master a loro scelta. Grazie all’attenta supervisione della collaborazione con l’ateneo americano della professoressa Sabrina Francesconi del Dipartimento di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università di Trento, che da anni segue con impegno gli studenti in scambio affiancandoli nella scelta dei rispettivi corsi, e alla disponibilità della professoressa Annastella Vester, coordinatrice dell’ambito “Italian Studies” presso la West Virginia University, è stata resa possibile la realizzazione di questo programma estivo intensivo per gli studenti americani. Chiediamo alla professoressa Annastella Vester, che ha accompagnato gli studenti durante il loro soggiorno a Trento, alcune considerazioni su questa esperienza.
Professoressa Vester, quali sono state le motivazioni che le hanno fatto scegliere l’Università di Trento quale meta ideale per il programma estivo degli studenti della West Virginia University?
Ci sono due ragioni. La prima è la città di Trento, una città non troppo grande e sicura, a misura d’uomo, con un bellissimo centro storico e molta storia e cultura da scoprire. Inoltre la città è circondata dalle splendide Alpi e si trova vicino a molte mete turistiche interessanti per i miei studenti. Un’altra qualità di Trento è il fatto che ci sono pochi turisti americani e i miei studenti possono davvero vivere per quattro settimane in una realtà tutta italiana, avendo la possibilità di incontrare studenti italiani e stringere amicizia con loro. La seconda è l’Università di Trento, un’università con un’ottima reputazione, un’università bene organizzata con innumerevoli servizi che funzionano. Tutti gli impiegati dell’università con cui ho avuto a che fare per l’organizzazione della Summer School e durante lo svolgimento del programma sono stati estremamente gentili e efficienti. Il programma estivo a Trento ha inoltre permesso agli studenti americani di scoprire la città e di avere un primo contatto con l’università così da poter eventualmente scegliere di trascorrere un intero semestre presso l’Università di Trento.
Com’era strutturato il programma di studio nelle quattro settimane?
Gli studenti hanno seguito due corsi, un corso di lingua italiana presso il Centro Linguistico dell’Ateneo al mattino e un corso di cultura italiana insegnato da me al pomeriggio, presso un’aula messa a disposizione dal Dipartimento di Lettere e Filosofia. All’interno del corso di cultura, gli studenti hanno anche visitato diversi monumenti di Trento (le rovine romane e il Castello del Buonconsiglio) e alcune città italiane (Bolzano, Firenze e Venezia). Gli studenti hanno alloggiato a San Bartolameo, un residence studentesco molto bello dove hanno potuto incontrare e fare amicizia con molti studenti italiani e internazionali. Hanno anche avuto l’occasione per scoprire la cucina trentina, con frequenti cene in diversi locali di Trento.
Che cosa hanno potuto apprendere gli studenti durante il programma estivo a Trento?
Gli studenti hanno beneficiato molto dalla loro partecipazione nel programa estivo. Grazie ai corsi di lingua e al soggiorno in Italia, il loro italiano è migliorato molto, hanno fatto grandi progressi e si sentivano molto più a loro agio quando dovevano esprimersi in italiano. Grazie al corso di cultura e alle molte visite, hanno imparato molto sulla storia di Trento, del Trentino e dell’Italia in generale. Hanno anche potuto imparare molto sulla vita di tutti i giorni degli studenti italiani, confrontandosi con tradizioni e modi di fare diversi.
Come reputa i servizi dedicati agli studenti internazionali offerti dall’ateneo di Trento?
Trovo che i servizi siano ottimi e funzionino molto bene. Sono stata davvero sorpresa quando siamo arrivati e gli impiegati del residence universitario hanno proposto delle biciclette in affitto per i nostri studenti. Penso che l’università faccia molto per rendere la vita più facile agli studenti internazionali e per farli sentire a loro agio mentre studiano a Trento.
