In particolare, la EIT Digital Master School organizza sette programmi tecnici nelle seguenti discipline: Cloud and Network Infrastructures, Data Science, Embedding Systems, Cyber Security, Human Computer Interaction and Design, Autonomous Systems, Visual Computing and Communication.

The countdown is on for the 2019 opening of the EIT-Digital Master School, which will bring to Trento 400 students and 250 faculty and staff on 25 and 26 October. EIT Digital is a leading European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organization driving Europe’s digital transformation, and is supported by the European Union through the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. EIT Digital is organized in nodes, which are located in various cities around Europe, including Trento.

We have reached Professor Yannis Velegrakis of the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Trento, who is the local organization chair of the event and also the coordinator of the Data Science specialization of the EIT Digital Master School in Trento, to ask him some questions about this upcoming event and the study programs.

Yannis VelegrakisProfessor Velegrakis, can you tell us something more about EIT Digital?

EIT Digital aims at promoting innovation in Europe. In terms of education, it does this through PhD and Master level programs offered by top European universities that join forces to provide students with a unique learning experience.

The EIT Digital Master School in particular offers seven technical programs in Cloud and Network Infrastructures, Data Science, Embedding Systems, Cyber Security, Human Computer Interaction and Design, Autonomous Systems, Visual Computing and Communication.

Besides fundamental knowledge on ICT topics, students also learn to drive innovation to the market through courses that focus on entrepreneurship and business development.

This is a Europe-wide program, what does this mean for students?

EIT Digital Master School students study in top universities in different countries. They are required to spend the first year in one university where they learn the basics of their chosen subject, and the second year in another university where they specialize further and also perform their thesis. During their two-year program, students complete a work placement as well as a two-week Summer School program. Overall, some students could end up visiting up to five countries during their studies.

Graduates are awarded a double master's degree coupled with a certificate from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

International mobility gives them the opportunity to experience different cultures and different scientific environments.

What about the kick-off event?

The kick-off takes place each year in a different city. This year it is hosted by the University of Trento. About 400 students who have been admitted this year to one of the seven EIT Digital Master School programs from all over the world will come together to meet, learn and work.

The event starts with the opening ceremony on Friday 25 October, which includes talks by EIT Digital CEO Willem Jonker, Chief Education Officer Roberto Prieto, the Master School Coordinator Arturo Verona, and by three leading industrial figures that we have invited. In addition, we have welcome salutations from the University Vice-Rector Flavio Deflorian, and the EIT Digital Italy Director Gian Mario Maggio.

The program includes also a Business Challenge, where the students work in teams, under pressure, to find innovative tech solutions and formulate a realistic business plan on a real-world problem. During this competition, they are guided by many professors, innovators, and former-EIT Digital students who serve as mentors.

Faculty and staff from all the participating universities will take advantage of this opportunity to get together, plan the educational activities, design new policies, and investigate novel directions in terms of courses and synergies.

Who are the three guests?

The three guest we have invited are Franco Bernabè, former chairman of the board and CEO of Telecom Italia, currently chairman of FB Group; Stefano Spaggiari, founder and CEO of Expert System; and Silvia Zanella, Marketing, Communications and Digital HR Director, currently Head of Employer Branding and HR Communications at EY.

How is UniTrento involved?

The University of Trento is one of the founding members of the EIT Digital Master school, meaning that it has been part of the project since the beginning. It participates mainly with its Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, but also with the Department of Industrial Engineering, that offers the Master in Autonomous Systems.

As one of EIT Digital’s nodes, Trento is also home to one of its co-location Centres, which is located at FBK (a public Research Institute whose headquarters are next to those of the above-mentioned departments) and collaborates in the management and organization of the programs.

Every year the University of Trento receives around 50 students in the school’s seven programs, all financially supported by the EIT Digital.

These students are making a significant contribution to the Trento ecosystem because they provide local companies with highly skilled technical personnel when they work on their theses and carry out their internships, but also at a later stage, since many of them choose to remain and work in Trento, thus contributing to the local economy with their advanced technical skills.
