18.00 pm
Where: Auditorium - Department of Humanities, via Tomaso Gar, 14 - Trento

What is going on, on the Italian Apennines? Why did an earthquake that released less energy than the one that struck l’Aquila, in a sparsely populated area, cause so many victims? How should we face the risk of seismic events?
What are the specific features of our country? What is the role of applicable laws, of the Protezione Civile and the Commissione Grandi Rischi?
What can we do to be prepared? What are the costs of an earthquake? Who pays and why?
What is the role of insurance companies, if any?
The discussion will focus on these and other questions.

The University of Trento, which has long been involved in research projects on the prevention of exceptional events, meets the citizens to understand what is going on in Italy and what can be done.
The special guest on the occasion will be the Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia, internationally renowned study centre for seismic engineering and seismology, and long-time partner of the University of Trento.

Welcome speech:

  • Paolo Collini, Rector of the University of Trento

Speakers:

  • Gian Michele Calvi, full professor at IUSS Pavia and Head of the UME Centre - Understanding and Managing Extremes
  • Riccardo Zandonini, full professor at the University of Trento and member of the steering committee of the Network of university labs for research in seismic engineering (Rete dei Laboratori Universitari per l’Ingegneria Sismica - ReLUIS)

Moderator:

  • Gabriele Carletti, RAI journalist

Admission is open and free to the public.

The event is organized by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento.
