Dario Mantovani is an historian of Roman law. Since 2018, he is a professor at the Collège de France on the chair Droit, Culture et Société de la Rome Antique. He started his university career in Trento in 1988, then in Parma and finally Pavia where he graduated.
Dario Mantovani is the author of around 170 publications. His most recent books include Les juristes écrivains de la Rome antique, Les œuvres des juristes romains comme littérature (Paris, 2018) and Legum multitudo. La presencia de las leyes públicas en el derecho privado romano (Valencia, 2022). He is interested in the legal thought of the Roman jurists and its form of literary expression: his aim is to understand Roman legal thought within the framework of ancient culture and society. Mantovani is also interested in the history of education: he edited the collective work Almum Studium Papiense. Storia dell'Università di Pavia (6 volumes, Milan, 2012-2020) and chairs the Center for the History of the University of Pavia. He was PI of the Erc Advanced Grant Redhis project concerning the circulation of classical legal thought in Late Antiquity. He co-directs (with Ph. Moreau) the project Lepor. Leges Populi Romani (Anhima, Paris). He is the editor of the journal Athenaeum and member of the scientific board of 11 international journals.
His zest for teaching led Mantovani to found the Cedant (Centre for Studies and Research on the Laws of Antiquity), active since 2003, which organises a month-long school every two years; since 2017, he leads the Atelier d'introduction aux sources du droit romain, with Jean-Louis Ferrary and now with Hélène Ménard, lasting one week at the École Française de Rome. He is vice-president of the Société internationale de Bibliographie Classique, responsible for the publication of L'Année Philologique and chairs the Conseil Scientifique of the École Française de Rome for the 2020-23 term. He is a member of the Istituto Lombardo and Correspondant Étranger de l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.

Event organized by the Department of Humanities and the Faculty of Law.
