Professor Chartier, formerly director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and now professor emeritus of the same College, teaches Modern History, and in particular the history of culture. He is one of the world's leading specialists of the historical thinking regarding the texts and their production and reception. He directed the volume "From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment" of the History of Private Life directed by Ariès and Duby and (together with Guglielmo Cavallo) the "History of reading in the Western world" published by Laterza.
