The purpose of the conference, organized by the Ministry of Foreign affairs and international cooperation with support from APRE (Agency for the Promotion of European Research), is to advertise the actions, instruments and accomplishments of Scientific diplomacy by presenting the results achieved by scientific agents and discussing future perspectives for the integrated promotion of Italian products, considering among other things the benefits of the digital revolution highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first part of the conference, that will be streamed, will present to academics and business people, in particular, the growing importance of scientific and technological research for the competitiveness of Italy, enhancing the government's commitment to promote innovation and its impact on the Italian business sector.

Items on the agenda include the importance of promoting investments and to encourage international cooperation in science and technology as drivers for Italy's competitiveness and, in general, for the advantages it brings to our quality of life.

The conference will continue in the afternoon with a closed door session, where scientific agents will further discuss some topics.

The conference provides an opportunity for the Italian scientific diplomacy to collect and explore ideas and to refresh objectives and strategies.

"Virtual rooms" will be set up for scientific agents and the participants to discuss issues relevant to the countries where they are working.

Open session

From 10.00 to 11.00, with speeches from the Minister of Foreign affairs and international cooperation Luigi Di Maio, the Minister of University and research Gaetano Manfredi, the Minister of Technological innovation and digitalization Paola Pisano, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign affairs and international cooperation Elisabetta Belloni.

During this session, the “Italian Bilateral Scientific Cooperation Award” and the “L'Innovazione che Parla Italiano” award will be conferred (Premi Farnesina 2020).

Discussion group

From 11.00 to 13.00, on “Il ruolo della ricerca e dell’innovazione quale volano per la competitività del Sistema Italia: la Diplomazia Scientifica, il ruolo degli Addetti Scientifici e gli strumenti a disposizione” (The role of research and innovation as drivers for Italian competitiveness: scientific diplomacy, scientific agents and their instruments). Moderator: Federico Taddia, TV presenter and author, with:

  • Barbara Gallavotti, scientific consultant, Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia “Leonardo Da Vinci”
  • Ilaria Capua, director of One Health, University of Florida
  • Luca Parmitano, astronaut
  • Antonio Guarino, president of (Association of Italian Scientists in the UK)
  • Giulio Ranzo, CEO of Avio Spa
  • Carlo Rovelli, theoretical physicist and writer.

The session will end with an address by Lorenzo Angeloni, Director General for Country Promotion of the Ministry of Foreign affairs and international cooperation.
