Axonal protein synthesis in health and disease: a new role for endosomes

Abstract:

Local translation of mRNAs can rapidly regulate the proteome at the subcellular level. This regulation might be particularly important in morphologically complex and polarized cells such as neurons, where precise expression of specific proteins is necessary to achieve highly compartmentalized functions. In this talk, I will present evidence unveiling a role for endosomes in controlling local protein synthesis in axons. In particular, I will share our findings indicating that endosomal control of protein synthesis is important to supply ‘on-site’ nascent proteins that promote axon maintenance, and that impairment of this process could contribute to the pathogenesis of axonopathies.
