Flood hazard, mitigation works and residual risks: how can we manage changes over time?
Workshop
Torrential risk protection works have a long tradition in Trentino, as well as in the Alps in general, where these measures have allowed more intensive use of the landscape since the twentieth century and form the basis for rational management of the risk of torrential floods. At present, thousands of protective works of different ages and conditions characterize the watercourses of the Province. The maintenance and management of protective works make it possible to control their inevitable deterioration and to extend their life.
The discussion about the future of these works requires a multidimensional evaluation, which concerns not only the structural and maintenance aspects of the single work but it must also the integrated risk management, including residual risk. Today, in fact, protection systems must respond to needs that have changed over time and be flexible towards the uncertainties also linked to climate change. The focus is no longer on purely structural measures, but on an optimal combination of planning-organizational activities and on adequate individual and collection behaviors during flood events.
The meeting aims to frame these problems from an interdisciplinary perspective during the first day with talks by international experts, while on the second day, ongoing experiences in different Italian regional administrations in the Alpine region will be compared.
