Abstract

In this talk I’ll introduce the notion of event-triggered controller implementation as a way to reduce the transmission of measurement (and actuation) signals between controller, sensors and actuators. The driving motivation for such implementations is to enable more efficient use of communication channels in networked control systems.
I will focus on several decentralized schemes suitable for typical wireless networked control systems, providing improvements on the usage of communications. 
I will point to several challenges posed by these new implementation paradigms and offer some preliminary solutions. In particular, I will discuss: i) the issue of relating events with energy consumption (and how to minimize the latter); and ii) how to schedule multiple event-triggered control loops. 

About the Speaker

Dr. Manuel Mazo Jr. (Male) is an assistant professor at the Delft Centre for Systems and Control, TU Delft, since 2012. He received his MSc and PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2007 and 2010 respectively. He also holds a Telecommunications Engineering "Ingeniero" degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain), and a "Civilingenjör" degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), both awarded in 2003. Between 2010 and 2012 he held a joint post-doctoral position at the University of Groningen and the innovation centre INCAS3 (The Netherlands). 
His main research interest is the formal study of problems emerging in the control of cyber-physical systems, in particular in the study of networked embedded control systems, and the application of symbolic verification and synthesis techniques to complex control problems.
