Abstract
Since the 1980s, there has been a great deal of work on the problem of compactifying moduli spaces of surfaces, following work of Kollár and Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev.
I will discuss some practical aspects around the theme of KSBA-compactifications and their implications for the study of the geography of threefolds of general type.
