Abstract

Recent studies into neonatal diabetes have increasingly focused on ATP-sensitive K+ channels (KATP channels) which play a fundamental role in the insulin secretion. In fact, these channels couple metabolism to electrical activity of the plasma membrane in the β-cell. Genetic mutations of the two essential subunits of these channels can result in both hypo- and hyper-glycemia, as well as neurological disruptions. The majority of patients with these mutations have been treated by high doses of oral sulphonylurea drugs. In order to improve the treatment, an exhaustive knowledge of β-cell nature from a physiological point of view is hence needed. As a necessary and preliminary step towards the simulation of more complex pathological situations, in this project we present a mathematical model to describe the dynamics of metabolites in healthy pancreatic β-cell.
