I investigate Kac-Moody and Borcherds extensions of the exceptional Lie algebra e8 with the purpose of defining an algebra A as the basis for a quantum model of the universe at its early stages. The model includes a mechanism for the expansion of space and matter from a quantum initial condition. A vertex operator algebra V(A) is built on the e8 extension. Particle interactions and creation/annihilation are driven by the algebraic rules of A. Space creation is viewed as a co-algebra structure on V(A).
