Abstract

In the first part of this talk we will review some results obtained in our group on the fundamental properties of whispering-gallery-mode micro-lasers consisting of high-Q factor erbium doped glass microspheres. In particular, we will detail the peculiarities of the dynamics of these low mode volume lasers. In the second part, we will describe some architectures of magnetometers based on diamond NV centers embedded in optical cavities. We will show that this approach could lead to the miniaturization of magnetic field sensors with a sensitivity of few pT/Hz^1/2.
