Abstract:
Normal modes are a very familiar class of solutions for linear  dynamical systems, since they constitute the building blocks of the small oscillations about an elliptic equilibrium. Although they are so  fundamental at the linear regime, their relevance (or even existence!) might not be obvious stepping outside that world. In this talk we present the attempts done in the last decades to extend this notion to nonlinear mechanical systems, introducing the less familiar Nonlinear Normal Modes and sketching why they might be useful in the study of the asymptotic behaviour of dissipative systems.
