Ancient Afro Eurasia in Context(s): theory, method, perspectives
Goals of the Lecture Series: drawing on the recent publication of three major volumes (Hodos, T. (Ed.), 2017. The Routledge Handbook of Archaeology and Globalization, von Reden, S. (Ed.), 2019. Handbook of Ancient AfroEurasian Economies, Mairs, R. (Ed.), 2020. The Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek World), this online lecture series aims, among other things, at removing ancient Central Asia from an inveterate stereotype that has long relegated it to the rank of exotic periphery of one or more empires (in the West, the Seleukid and then Roman empires, in the East, the Chinese imperial polities), adopting a multidisciplinary perspective capable of offering fruitful insights both for specialists already acquainted with this world(s) and for scholars active in other fields of research. At the same time the lecture series will offer to a wider audience an updated and exhaustive critical overview on the role of this area of the Eurasian continent in a long-term perspective. As it appears, this may be useful in the light of the most recent developments in international geopolitics, in which context, for example, the evocative power of a construct such as the Silk Road has been abundantly mobilized.
