Abstract

The direct account of one of the most complex diplomatic campaigns that our country has conducted in recent decades: the negotiations, between 1996 and 1998, to bring Italy among the founders of the single currency of the EU. Then as much as now, Italy was looking for a lifeline in Europe after a devastating crisis.
The risk of being excluded from the new Europe that was being built around the single currency was collectively perceived as a threat, and the country was able to react by mobilizing all its resources to continue to share its destiny with the rest of the continent. Battocchi offers us a first person account, with an injection of humanity in addition to the numbers and financial criteria, to shine a light on a little known chapter of our history, a crucial point in our being part of Europe. The author introduces the reader to the faces, thoughts and anxieties of Germany in those years, as the country was in search for a new identity after the reunification and anxious to be part of globalization, and describes the "behind the scenes" of the efforts that were made to show Italy, which was still largely misunderstood north of the Alps, as a rapidly transforming nation. Now that Italy is preparing to implement the National Recovery and Resilience Plan designed by Mario Draghi, who was then a protagonist of that battle alongside Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the events of those years resurface and suggest a reflection on how to best face the current historical phase.
