Madeleine Albright

After serving as Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, Madeleine Albright was the first woman to serve as US Secretary of State between 1997 and 2001. During her time at the UN, she had to deal with the genocide in Rwanda. As Secretary of State, she played a leading role in some of the key events of the late 1990s, such as the first enlargement of NATO to the East or the military intervention in Kosovo. Considering the United States as the “indispensable nation”, she gave an essential contribution to the formalisation of the doctrine of “assertive multilateralism” and fuelled the global debate on humanitarian interventions.
