The Visual Turn in Security Studies

Every year the Master's Degree in International Studies starts off with an opening event jointly organised by the School of International Studies (UniTrento) and the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa).

This year, we focus on the so-called "visual turn" in Security Studies and we will host two special guests: Lene Hansen and Lorenzo Pezzani - in addition to some of our faculty members.

Lene Hansen (University of Copenhagen) is one of the key contributors of the Copenhagen School of Security Studies. Her take on interpretive methodologies, discourse analysis and the analysis of images, as well as the interplay between gender and security and feminist approaches significantly innovate the field of security studies. She has recently coordinated a research project titled "Bodies as Battleground: Gender Images and International Security” (2018-2022) and has been the 2024 recipient of the ISA Susan Strange Award.

Lorenzo Pezzani (University of Bologna) is an architect and researcher. His work deals with the spatial politics, visual cultures and political ecologies of migration and borders. He collaborates with Forensic Architecture and has been the co-founder of projects such as Forensic Oceanography, Border Forensics,  WatchTheMed, working at the crossroads of academic research, the arts and non-governmental activism.
