Abstract:
The promotion of regionalism and the development of interregional relations are two pillars of the EU’s identity as an international actor, making it unique in international relations. In the 1990s, they became a distinctive feature of the “globalization of EU foreign policy” as part of a broader strategy aimed to spread EU’s norms and values, to promote the development of regional integration on other continents according to the EU’s model, and to pursue the Altiero Spinelli’s motto “Uniting Europe to Unite the World”. The lecture explores this policy, its drivers, its instruments and its outcomes.  Moreover, it assesses how it is changing in the context of the economic and political crisis affecting the EU, and how these changes are affecting the EU’s role in the world.
