The new Student eCard of the University of Trento and is a personal identification document that can also be used to obtain special student deals and discounts. Created as a digital tool to quickly check student ids, the Student eCard is now available within the UniTrentoApp, the mobile app of the University of Trento that is used daily by thousands of people in the University community.
The University of Trento is among the first universities in Italy to introduce a digital card integrated into an app to allow students to view their student records, find information about their progress and access various University services. The Student eCard will be used primarily to identify students in University settings, that is at exam sessions and in administrative procedures. But soon it will also be used to quickly and securely prove one's student status and thus to obtain student deals and discounts at cinemas, theaters, museums, shops and many other private and public entities.
The Student eCard was developed based on a "digital first" approach that aims to develop digitally native services and functions that can be used on different platforms and devices. This approach takes full advantage of new technologies and improves the efficiency of services because it automatically integrates different functions and makes them available on different channels. It is a small revolution in University communication and is especially targeted to young people, who are used to getting information and accessing services through electronic devices. That is why the University has decided to develop the UniTrentoApp and now, with the help of student representatives, the new Student eCard.
How it works
The Student eCard is a feature of the UniTrentoApp. Just like any identification document, it contains the picture and personal data of the holder (students with an alias will see their name of choice). A menu item makes it possible to view more detailed data, for example the programme of study or the enrolment status.
With the Student eCard it is possible to verify the identity and student status of a person in compliance with privacy regulations. Staff who have to verify student IDs or the status of student scan a dynamically generated QR code that is visible for 3 minutes, and are connected to a web service provided by UniTrento that certifies the authenticity of the Student eCard.
Who can obtain a Student eCard?
The Student eCard will be available to individuals who hold the status of student of the University of Trento, i.e. those who are regularly enrolled in the current or previous academic year in one of the following programmes: an undergraduate or graduate programme, a single-cycle master's degree programme (or a degree programme based on the old University system), a PhD programme, or a first or second-level Master's programme offered by UniTrento; an interuniversity undergraduate or graduate programme involving UniTrento but based at the partner university; the Dual Career programme for student-athletes; an international student exchange programme such as Erasmus or a programme based on a bilateral agreement.
Students must also have a verified photo in their digital profile on the UniTrentoApp. Students who have not done so, can have their photo verified through the "Student Photo" online desk, that will be open until 12 November.
The Student eCard does not replace, for the moment, the Opera Universitaria card, that will continue to be necessary to pay for meals and to access some places and facilities reserved to the university community. The e-Card is an important first step towards dematerialization and a better integration of the digital and physical services offered by UniTrento.
