Applications to the 2022 edition of the PROTO Challenge are open. The PROTO Challenge is a 10-week open innovation initiative organized by Hub Innovazione Trentino in collaboration with the University of Trento that will allow five multidisciplinary teams of students and doctoral students with a background in mechanical, mechatronics and materials engenineering optimizing the mechanical performance of industrial products and elements provided by five companies that wish to explore the adoption of additive manufacturing.
The Challenge will begin on March 9th and will end with a final results presentation event on 25 May 2022.
During the Challenge, the five multidisciplinary teams will work with industry experts from both academia and industry to optimize the performance of products offered by companies. The teams will start from a 3D CAD project, will perform Finite Element Analysis for topological and thermal optimization and will redesign the product so that it can be manufactured with additive or mixed techniques, or with traditional techniques but with greater advantages.
Students will be appropriately trained on the methodologies to be used and organized in teams before the start of the Challenge.
Students and former students (up to 18 months from the attainment of the last degree) of the Universities of Trento and Bolzano, and of the Universities part of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) can apply participate in the PROTO Challenge.
The Solver group that will produce the solution evaluated as the best by a commission of experts will receive an e-ink tablet as a prize, for drawing and taking notes and for reading documents and textbooks (eg “reMarkable”).

The PROTO Challenge is an initiative of the Trentino Innovation Hub, created in collaboration with the University of Trento, Trentino Sviluppo and the Prom Facility of the Mechatronics Center, Confindustria Trento, the Contamination Lab and NOI Techpark.
