Val di Rabbi and Val di Peio: the water that runs through these valleys is the natural element that shaped their identity and beauty. A natural resource, water is a source of revenue for hotel spas and a source of energy for the many hydroelectric power plants. A common good that must be shared with nearby Valle di Non, that needs it for agriculture and, at the same time, a force of nature that must be constantly monitored. The resources and fragile ecosystem of these valleys of Trentino around Val di Sole provide the starting point for a discussion on the sustainable development of the area.

Researchers and students from the University of Trento and three other Italian universities will experience this environment first hand by spending four days in the valley focusing on the issue. The co-design workshop will start on Friday, 11 February, at 2.30 pm in Cogolo, at the headquarters of Stelvio National Park, to end on Monday 14 February.

The initiative is part of the national research project "B4R. Branding for Resilience", coordinated by Università Politecnica delle Marche in collaboration with the University of Trento, the University of Palermo and Politecnico di Torino. The purpose of the project is to identify and valorize local resources and potentials to build, together with the communities, a better quality of living, new forms of environmental protection and a tourism model that can be combined with sustainable development.

In Trentino, the focus will be on water, which is the key element of Val di Sole and the nearby area. The research groups will explore the territory and meet the local communities to identify strategies and initiatives together. The four-day event will combine theory and practice, in the name of respect for the environment and for the well-being of guests and residents. Here are some discussion topics: responsible water management; current perspectives for spa tourism; the impact of mobility, where new cycle paths and intermodal transport can make a difference; reconstruction of past architecture starting from some abandoned sawmills; the balance between growth and hydrogeological risk.
