The National Recovery and Resilience Plan - Pnrr will also provide funding for doctoral scholarships. The relevant ministerial decrees appeared in April, while the calls for application will be published soon.

The University of Trento will be able to fund at least 48 new PhDs in the academic year 2022/23 (cycle 38).

One call provides for 18 doctoral scholarships for Pnrr research, the public administration and cultural heritage.

The other call will collect applications for at least 30 PhD scholarships co-funded by companies, within the 38th cycle, for projects that aim to strengthen high-profile skills, in particular in the areas of key enabling technologies. This action aims to respond to the innovation needs of companies and to promote the relationship between research and business.

The research topics of scholarships funded by the ministerial decrees within the Pnrr are binding and require the beneficiaries to participate in training experiences out of the university (at companies, research centres, public administrations) and periods of study and research abroad, to gain international experience in a foreign country and in the world of work.

The selection process will be completed by the end of the summer. The beneficiaries will begin their doctoral studies at the University of Trento on 1 November.

"I am very pleased – says Rector Flavio Deflorian – that the University has managed to transform the funding made available by the Pnrr into concrete opportunities in such a short time. Doctoral education, which should attract a greater number of students and recent graduates, is one of the supporting axis of the research system within the Pnrr, but also of the economic and business environment".

"PhD studies are changing – adds Francesco Pavani, rector's delegate for doctoral programmes at the University of Trento – the goal is to train the new generations of doctors with knowledge and skills that can be used not only in the world of academic and industrial research, but also in society, public administration, companies".

"It is a challenge with many implications – continues Pavani – that involves universities, which must broaden their education and research action, but also the world of work and economic sectors, which must make the most of the great potential offered by this level of education. The opportunity for future PhD students is to develop skills that are crucial in academia and in the world of work, critical thinking skills, an interdisciplinary approach, international experience, problem solving abilities and, in general, the ability to think out of the box".

The calls for applications will be published in the coming days on: https://www.unitn.it/bandi-phd-pnrr
