The citizens of Trento can participate in the third phase of the Survey on the objective and subjective security in the municipality of Trento, following the first two phases carried out in October 2013 and April 2014.

A sample of 4,000 citizens have participated in the survey, which is important to provide a complete and true scenario of the situation of crime, the perception of lack of security and urban degradation of the Municipality of Trento over the last year.

The survey aims at identifying through specific interviews the “Obscure figure” of crime that is the overall number of crimes which are not reported to the police and to understand the perception of citizens of the urban degradation and sense of insecurity.

If we compare these figures with the ones of the police we may notice possible discrepancies between the objective security of the city and the real situation of crime, and the subjective perception of security by citizens.

The survey was carried out in the framework of the European project eSecurity, the first project in the world of urban predictive security, coordinated by the research centre eCrime of the Faculty of Law of the University of Trento, in cooperation with the police of Trento, the ICT Centre of the Bruno Kessler Foundation and the Municipality of Trento. The project is co-financed by the European Commission (Directorate-General Home Affairs).

This research activity was repeated four times, every semester, during the project development. After the first two phases, the interview will be submitted to the citizens again, in October 2014. The fourth and last phase will be carried out in April 2015. This is the first time that a survey on victimization involves the city of Trento as an “experimental laboratory” and is carried out every six months to monitor the crime trend and the sense of insecurity of inhabitants.

The survey interviews is submitted to about 4,000 citizens belonging to a representative sample, obtained from the personal data records of the municipality of Trento. Citizens may reply online on the website www.esecurity.trento.it or by phone (calling 0461 282334). The selected citizens have been invited, via email or mail, to participate in the new phase of the survey. The team uses the interview to collect information on crimes committed against the citizens of Trento, between October 2013 and September 2014, and on the level of urban degradation and the sense of perceived security.
