Promoting the growth of a civically-engaged community of people that is willing to open a discussion on the themes of organized crime and the mafia, encourage a culture of lawfulness, and support an education in responsibility and social justice in higher education and research: that is the objective of the students who are members of the Libera chapter of the University of Trento who met with the rector today at Palazzo Sardagna to conclude a memorandum of understanding.

The agreement, signed by Rector Paolo Collini and Luigi Ciotti, the founder of Libera, will promote the development of courses in several degree programmes and the organization of awareness-raising activities for students, faculty and citizens.

The memorandum of understanding, which will last three years and can be renewed, makes it possible to strengthen and extend the relationship between the organization and some faculty members, in particular in the departments of Sociology, Economics and management, and Law.

One of the agreement’s priorities is to increase the presence and visibility of the Libera chapter of Trento within the University, to stimulate new training initiatives and research projects on the topics of the fight against the mafia.

There are many themes to explore based on the subject area: the transnational networking of criminal organizations, professional ethics, the promotion of the culture of lawfulness, education in responsibility and social justice. But also the history, organization, pervasiveness and social impact of the mafia. And other serious, present-day issues like underground work, the gangmaster system, the trafficking in human beings and weapons.
