The steering committee of the organic chemistry division of the Italian Chemical Society awarded the 2018 Quilico Medal to Graziano Guella, full professor of organic chemistry at the Physics department of the University of Trento.

The prize was awarded by the president of the Italian Chemical Society (professor Angela Agostiano) and the president of the organic chemistry division (professor Gianluca Farinola) during the 38th national congress of the division which took place in Milan from 9 to 13 September. The ceremony in which professor Guella received the 2018 Quilico gold medal was held in the afternoon of Sunday, 9 September, at the Renaissance-style Cà Granda, in the heart of the city, the historical home of the University of Milan.

The motivation for the award reads:

For the creativity and variety of his contributions to the chemistry of organic natural compounds in marine and terrestrial settings with biological, ecological and chemical taxonomical relevance, and for developing rigorous and innovative methodological approaches with applications to omic sciences and to the study of complex biological processes

The Adolfo Quilico Medal is awarded every year by the organic chemistry division of the Italian Chemical Society to an Italian or foreign scholar who conducted particularly significant research studies in the area of bioorganic chemistry.

Professor Graziano Guella then gave a lecture on "Learning Chemistry from Nature”, in which he illustrated to the audience some of his most remarkable works in the field of the chemistry of natural products.
