Open letter on the death of Giulio Regeni

Versione stampabile

As members of the academic community to which Giulio Regeni belonged, we feel the necessity to express our sorrow for his death, our solidarity to his family, and our concern for the situation of deprivation of liberty and repression that unequivocally emerged from his death.

We want to add our voice to that of other scholars’, who are mobilizing all around the world to ask for the truth about his death and about other cases of torture and death in custody, which occurred in Egypt and have been denounced by humanitarian organizations during the course of the last months.

We also call for a strong intervention of our governments to defend academic freedom, safety for researchers, and a commitment to continue the investigation so that the perpetrators of these crimes can be identified and brought to justice.

Finally, we ask our governments not to show any leniency towards the recurrence of serious human rights violations, such as those on which our young colleague was investigating, paying the ultimate price for his courage and his civic engagement.
