ELLIS, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, has just launched the new Fellow Program on Multimodal Learning Systems. The newly approved program brings together 13 Fellows from 12 world-class institutions across Europe.

Nicu Sebe, full professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, is heading the program together with Cees Snoek from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Maja Pantic from the Imperial College London, UK.

The goal of this program is to provide a venue to disseminate, discuss and synthesize the latest developments in the area of multimodal learning systems. The program intends to push the boundaries of the foundational aspects of this field, to build bridges between researchers and practitioners currently active in multiple unimodal communities, as well as expanding and exploring the applications of multimodal learning systems.

“First of all - comments prof. Sebe -  through this program we are able to put Trento in a prominent position on the European research map in learning and intelligent systems. Additionally, having an active role in the broad ELLIS community brings not only a good opportunity to showcase our excellent results in the field but also it is a gateway to have access to a pool of excellent PhD student candidates. The ambition is now to put together an ELLIS unit based in Trento which will represent an innovative ecosystem serving as an international talent magnet and an incubator of innovation”.

Prof. Sebe has also been appointed an “ELLIS fellow” together with prof. Elisa Ricci.
ELLIS Fellows are high-caliber scientists advancing the field, creating a community and giving a voice to Machine Learning and AI. They advance science and act as ambassadors of ELLIS. In addition, they provide strategic advice and leadership not just scientifically, but also in terms of how to build and grow ELLIS.
