The Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science is one of the "Departments of Excellence" from the University of Trento, selected among the ones on the Italian territory that will receive funding from MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research).
The "Departments of Excellence" represent an innovative intervention with a strong financial support, foreseen by law 232 of 2016 (budget law 2017), which rewards the Departments of the state universities that are characterized by excellence in their quality of research and projects.
“DISI has been selected by the Italian Ministry of Education as one of the best department nation-wide. This means that the department will receive a financing of 5.5 M euro for the next 5 years for hiring three new professors and for acquiring top infrastructure. ICT has an ever-increasing importance not only as a field in itself, but also and above all as a set of enabling technologies for other fields of knowledge and the society in the broadest sense. In fact, ICT has evolved from an initial sectorial perspective to an increasingly transversal and pervasive role with respect to other disciplines, which often enables new ways of doing research and, consequently, impacts on society with positive effects. This impact is also evidenced by the large demand for ICT courses at DISI. Moreover, this ICT push towards interdisciplinarity and its impact in real applications is one of the cornerstones of the Horizon 2020 program. DISI has taken this trend since its inception, cultivating interdisciplinary research and didactic relations with UNITN's facilities. The project approved by the ministry, will support these interdisciplinary activities and will constitute a boost to the ambitious objectives of the department” - commented Prof. Niculae Sebe, Director of the Department.
