Host University: University of Trento, Italy
Home university: National Aerospace University Kharkiv Aviation Institute, Ukraine
Mobility program: Exchange program Erasmus+ ICM – administrative staff mobility
Mobility Period: 23/03/2022 - still active

I’m Nataly Sytnyk, a Head of Mobility Department at National Aerospace University Kharkiv Aviation Institute, Ukraine.
Now I understand how unpredictable life can be and just change completely in one moment. Yesterday we worked every day on general issues for KhAI mobility students, and today I am saving myself and my son from the war and a participant in the mobility program in UniTrento.
My house is located in the Kharkiv region, 10 km from the border with Russia. At 5 am we were awakened by a roar and explosions. The house went out of light, turned off the heating. Cellular communication worked intermittently. Something was burning strongly in the direction of the city and we did not know if we could get into the city or if the road had already been seized by the Russian invaders.
We took a risk and went to Kharkiv 14 long kilometers across open territory where we were targets for Russian tanks.
20 minutes after our passage, the bridge connecting Kharkiv and the border villages was blown up. All those who remained on the other side for a long 60 days found themselves in occupation, without electricity, communications, food and heat.
We arrived at my mother's apartment and at first, we didn't plan to go anywhere. We hid in the bomb shelter of the university, dealt with the evacuation of foreign students. But when the explosions became very close, shelling of residential buildings, shops, hospitals, schools and universities began, we decided to save our family and leave Kharkiv. We drove towards Western Ukraine. We didn’t know exactly where, we just drove as far away from the bombings as possible.
Our journey has been long. In three cars with our relatives, we drove around Ukraine for 5 days and every day unknown people helped us with housing and food.
But there was no understanding of what to do next. We could only plan for 1 day. All this time, every day I received letters of support from Daniela Tosi, knowing our situation, she offered to come to Italy. The UniTrento provided housing for my son and me, and I got the opportunity to complete a full-time internship at the International Relations Division of the UniTrento, thanks to Daniela Tosi, an employee of this department.
I was very quickly promptly initiated into the intricacies of the work of the department. It was captivating to deal with all issues related to the organization of the conference. During it, I expanded my circle of international contacts. Living through the most difficult times in our country, we continue to work, study and look for new opportunities for future cooperation.
I gained the most valuable experience in communication with all employees of the department who are engaged in different areas of activity. Throughout this time, they constantly supported me not only professionally, but also on everyday issues. Daily personal support is also invaluable. Thanks to the International Relations Division, Faculties, and Administration of the University for supporting Ukrainians. I would also like to note that the UniTrento has extended scholarships for KhAI students who stayed from the autumn term, and gave a scholarship for risk to our professor for an internship for 6 months. Also, 15 new students from Ukraine got scholarships for studying here during the next autumn term.
