The Brett William Campbell PhD Thesis Prize in International Studies

The University of Trento in collaboration with the School of International Studies make one PhD thesis prize available in memory of Dr Brett William Campbell.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 27 July 1979, Brett left us on 29 July 2018 after losing his battle against cancer.

In 2012 Brett was admitted to the PhD programme in International Studies at the University of Trento, Italy, where he was awarded a full scholarship for his research. His work focussed on U.S. counterterrorism and the Drone War (targeted killing via unmanned aerial vehicles outside established conflict zones), often depicted as a “costless war”.

Applicants may submit their PhD thesis in the field of political science, sociology, philosophy, economics, or law and pertaining to one of the following thematic areas:

  • The costs and effects of drone wars;
  • State reputation in international relations, especially in the realm of security;
  • The legal and political implications of new military technologies on international politics and domestic democracy.
