Using cartography to map the impact of conflicts

The War History Museum of Rovereto and the University of Trento join forces in new partnership

Versione stampabile

For the first time, the Department of Humanities of the University of Trento and the War History Museum of Rovereto will conduct joint studies on historical geography, cartography history, cultural heritage, and Italian military history, by participating together in research funding applications and providing joint research grants. The scientific collaboration will focus in particular on the acquisition, study, digitization and enhancement of geographic and historical documents preserved by the Museum (reports, maps, models, iconographies). The partnership and research activities are promoted by the University's Geography and cartography research centre-GeCo. The agreement establishing the partnership was signed weeks ago and will last for five years.

One of the core objectives of the project is to promote and disseminate the historical and geographical heritage through exhibitions and public conferences to the benefit of society and local communities. These events will provide the opportunity to draw attention to the city of Rovereto and the province of Trento through a reflection on a number of themes - such as landscape and its representation - of national and international interest.

The War History Museum is one of Italy's most important museums for the study of conflicts and of World War One and Two in particular, encouraging research and studies into the impact of war on the territory and the regional landscape.

GeCo, created as a partnership between the University of Trento, the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Municipality of Rovereto, carries out research, teaching and dissemination activities in the area of geography, historical geography, cartography history and environmental and historical heritage.

Elena Dai Prà, professor of geography at the Department of Humanities and director of GeCo, and Francesco Frizzera of the Historical War Museum, are responsible for the implementation of the partnership.
