On 1st December, in Bochum, Professor Giorgio Vallortigara received an honorary degree in psychology from the Ruhr University.
The German university awarded the degree two other times in its history, and its Psychology department proposed to confer the title to professor Vallortigara “in appreciation of his work which led to remarkable progress in the area of neuroscience and helped increase the reputation of psychology in science and society”.
Professor Onur Güntürkün of the Faculty of Psychology gave the traditional address to honour the awardee in a ceremony with Rector Axel Schölmerich, the dean Silvia Schneider, and all faculty members.
Professor Vallortigara is a neuroscientist and the vice-rector for research at the University of Trento, where he investigates the neural bases of cognitive processes in a comparative perspective. His research work covers the origins of cognition, the evolution of the nervous system and functional cerebral asymmetries.
The quality of his studies and over 300 publications in highly regarded journals attracted the attention of the international scientific community.
The award of the title will also further strengthen the relationship between the University of Trento and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, which started thanks to Professor Vallortigara as a research partnership.
