The University of Trento placed 389th in the QS World University Rankings 2020, in a tie with the University of Siena, and moved up by 37 positions from last year.

The QS rankings include one thousand of the world's best universities. Universities are assessed based on a number of indicators such as the academic reputation of faculty members, the employers' reputation of graduates and of the university, the impact of the quality of research, the quality of teaching, the international character. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), founded in 1990 by Nunzio Quacquarelli and Matt Symonds, is a British company specialising in university surveys and foreign study programmes which issues every year one of the most influential university rankings in the world.

The University of Trento ranked ninth among the Italian universities included in the ranking. "This is a remarkable achievement for a young University like ours – underlined Fabio Massacci, rector's delegate for national and international positioning. The international reputation of our University, the impact and visibility of our research outputs (citations), and the reputation of our academics are our strengths, and I think they are very important aspects for prospective students as well. The position in the ranking matters, but students make their choices based on the quality of teaching and on the academic community of the university".

"This is great news and we are very happy that our University has been getting better and better. Two years ago we were in the 441-450 group, last year we climbed up to the 426th place and now we reached 389th: we continue to grow", commented rector Paolo Collini. He added: "UniTrento is one of the 34 Italian universities included in the ranking and has what it takes to compete with the best universities in the world".
