There is a new staff member in the research group on atmospheric physics of the University of Trento that has been studying atmospheric dynamics for almost 25 years. Simona Bordoni (©Giovanni Cavulli per UniTrento)

Her name is Simona Bordoni, a professor of atmospheric physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) who decided to come back to Italy after 19 years spent studying and working abroad. Her solid background and research experience on large-scale atmospheric circulations and their importance for global warming and on other atmospheric phenomena like monsoons, El Niño, cyclones and tropical precipitation, will benefit our University and students.

Bordoni earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 1996 and started to work for a Rome-based company, but in 2001 moved to the United States to complete her education with a PhD in atmospheric and oceanic sciences at the University of California-Los Angeles. After a postdoc at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research she moved to Caltech, where she continued her academic career while teaching and doing research until last summer.

In September she started work at the University of Trento. Simona Bordoni, 48, will study climate change and teach at the inter-university Master's degree in Environmental meteorology, the English-taught programme organized jointly with the University of Innsbruck, to introduce students to meteorology and climate science.
