Election of the Rector

Versione stampabile

The elections of the Rector who will be in office in the 2021-2027 term will take place on Tuesday 23 February, from 9.00 to 17.30.

The two candidates who are running for the post are: Flavio Deflorian, full professor of Materials Science and Technology at the Department of Industrial Engineering, and Massimiliano Sala, full professor of Algebra at the Department of Mathematics.

For the first time in the history of the University of Trento, voting will be online on https://elezioni.unitn.it/ through Helios Voting.

The election was called by the dean of the University of Trento, Remo Job, who invited the 2737 electors to vote. The first round of voting is set for tomorrow, Tuesday 23 February, while any second and third rounds and final ballot are scheduled for 24, 25 and 26 February respectively.

In order for the new rector, who will be in office in the 2021-2027 term, to be elected tomorrow, at least one third of those entitled to vote must participate in the voting, and a candidate must obtain an absolute majority of votes.

The number of votes cast and the number of votes for each candidate are calculated according to a weighted formula, in compliance with the University Charter and General Regulations. If after three rounds of voting no candidate is elected, a last ballot is held between the two candidates who received the most votes in the third round of voting. The last ballot is valid however many voters cast their vote. In the event of a tie, the candidate with greater seniority as professor is elected or, if the tie persists, the senior candidate.

The electorate consists of tenured professors, researchers, technical and administrative staff, and student representatives, but votes are weighed differently. Tenured professors, permanent and senior researchers (663), members of the Student Council (19), cast full votes.
The votes cast by post-doc researchers, PhD students, research grant holders (law 240/2010) and by researchers employed under law 230/2005 are weighted so that they represent 2% of the votes (1288 people and 13.64 votes, each weighting 0.0106).

Finally, the votes of the executive staff, technical and administrative staff and language experts employed by the university are weighted so that they represent 4% of the votes (767 people and 27.28 votes, each weighting 0.0356).

The Central Electoral Commission will meet at Palazzo Sardagna. Because of the online voting system, the result of the election should be known quickly.

Official results and further information will be provided in live streaming on YouTube, tomorrow, from 5.40 pm approximately.
